Susan Moxley is an
Oxford-based artist. This exhibition is
the culmination of a year’s work.
Her 100 portraits of women hang side by side to form
one enormous painting.
Each woman is individual, has her own space and story…
yet, seen as a group, they force us to ask: Who are they? What is their
relation to each other? Where are they from, and what are the battles each has
had to face?
Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer half way
through this project, which has enabled her to answer one of these questions by
graphically showing her own major life changing experience since the start of
this project.

These panels were created by the
Oxford
multicultural textile group Textiles for Peace. To commemorate the 2007 Bicentenary of the Abolition of the
Transatlantic Slave Trade, women from
Oxford
stitched their own personal squares in an expression of ‘Living in
Oxford
– Multicultural
Experience’. The completed artwork
provides a rich and fascinating picture, through the medium of appliqué,
embroidery, felt work, batik, beading, mirror work and other techniques, of how
we all came to be living in this patchwork community.

The Oxfordshire Bengali Cultural Society (UDAYAN) presents Ananya Chatterjee, the award winner Indian Classical dance
virtuoso of traditional Bharatanatyam style. This particular dance technique was used by ‘Devdasis’ or temple dancers for centuries. While the devdasis were recognized for their artistic talents, they
had low social status in the society. Over the years, Bharatanatyam has evolved as a
popular art form used to depict the prowess of womanhood and spiritual emancipation
through the worship of Gods & Goddesses of Hindu Mythology.
Prior to each item the artist will
share her expertise and knowledge through lecture demonstration, workshop,
group and solo performances. Also
includes literary contributions by Udayan members.
